How it Works: Bold Care's Weight Management Program

A weight-loss program built for your body at 65+ designed to help you lose fat, not muscle – so you can reduce pain, gain energy, and do more.

Key Takeaways:

  • Losing weight after 65 isn't the same as losing weight at 35. The goal isn't a smaller number on the scale. We’ll help you lose fat while protecting the muscle, bone density, and balance that keep you strong and independent.
  • Bold Care is a doctor-supervised program built for adults 65+ that works with or without medication, and it's covered by Medicare. For eligible members, that now includes FDA-approved GLP-1 medications for a $50 monthly copay.
  • Your care goes beyond the scale. Alongside any medication, your provider builds a personalized plan across nutrition, movement, sleep, and stress — no calorie tracking, meal logging, or wearables required.
  • 78% of Bold patients pay $0 out of pocket for their appointment.

Why losing weight at 65 is different than losing weight at 35

If you've tried to lose weight recently and felt like your body wasn't cooperating the way it used to, you're not imagining it. Starting in your 30s, you gradually lose muscle mass — about 5% per decade if you're not actively working to hold onto it.  Less muscle means a slower metabolism, which makes weight harder to lose and harder to keep off, even when you're eating the way you always have.

That's why the number on the scale can be so misleading. Plenty of people work hard to drop pounds, but lose muscle right along with the fat, ending up lighter but weaker, with more falls, less energy, and blood pressure and blood sugar that haven't budged. Losing weight the right way after age 65 means protecting what matters: your strength, your bones, and your balance.

That's the whole idea behind Bold Care. It's a doctor-supervised weight-loss program built specifically for adults 65 and older, designed to help you lose fat, not muscle — with or without medication, and covered by Medicare. Here's exactly how it works.

Getting started, step by step

Bold Weight Loss appointments are available in days, not months, and you can do the program entirely from home. Here’s how.

  • Check your coverage. Answer a few insurance questions — it takes about two minutes. Bold's team verifies your coverage and confirms your cost estimate before anything is booked, so there are no surprises.
  • Talk with your Care Coordinator. Your personal Care Coordinator walks you through a few health questions, gets a sense of your goals, and matches you with the right provider. If you have questions about insurance or what to expect, this is where they get answered.
  • Meet your provider virtually. Your first visit is an unhurried conversation during a 45 minute long appointment about your health history, your habits, and where you want to feel better. Your provider builds a personalized Care Plan and, if it's the right fit for your body, can prescribe an FDA-approved GLP-1.
  • Start losing weight safely. Your care team stays with you — checking in on progress, dosage, and any side effects, and adjusting the plan as you go so your results actually stick.
  • Keep going with follow-ups. You can meet with your provider as often as you need. Follow-up appointments are covered by insurance so you can see real, lasting weight loss.

Who you'll be working with

Bold Care providers are board-certified doctors, nurse practitioners, dietitians, and licensed social workers who specialize in lifestyle medicine — a field focused on the root causes of why you feel the way you do, not just managing symptoms. Instead of reaching for a prescription for every problem, they look at how your daily habits (what you eat, how you sleep, how you move, how you handle stress) are shaping your health.

Think of it as the conversation your primary care provider doesn't have time for. Bold Care works alongside your existing care team and complements your regular doctor — it doesn't replace them.

Your personalized Care Plan

This is the heart of your Bold Weight Loss program. Your provider builds your Care Plan around your body and your life, and it pulls on several levers at once — because weight at your age is rarely about just one thing.

  • Medication, when it's the right fit. For eligible members, your provider can prescribe FDA-approved GLP-1 medications — including Foundayo®, Wegovy®, and Zepbound®, with convenient pill options — matched to your health rather than a one-size-fits-all prescription. Through Medicare's new coverage, eligible members pay a $50 monthly copay for their medication. Just as important: medication is one piece of the plan, never the whole thing. On its own, a GLP-1 can accelerate  muscle and bone loss, which is exactly what the rest of your plan is built to prevent.
  • Nutrition support. Your provider helps you shift toward a way of eating that best supports muscle, energy, and steady weight loss for an older body, with practical, realistic guidance. There’s no restriction or crash dieting. (For a deeper look at what that actually looks like day to day, check out our Q&A with Bold Care's Christa Steffensmeier).
  • Movement and strength. You don't need a gym to get stronger. Your plan meets you where you are with personal exercise routines and movement programs. Your plan includes both accessible resistance training and cardio routines so you can build strength while losing weight.
  • Sleep, stress, and energy. These aren't afterthoughts – poor sleep and chronic stress raise cortisol and disrupt the hormones that regulate appetite and metabolism, quietly undermining everything else you're doing. Your provider treats them as part of the weight picture, not separate from it.

Also important, is what your plan doesn’t include. No wearables. No calorie counting. No meal logging. We’re all about making weight loss easy and approachable, personalized just for you.

What your appointment is actually like

Every appointment is virtual, with no travel, no waiting room, no fasting, and no complicated forms — you can meet over Zoom or a phone call, whichever feels easiest. Visits run about 45 to 60 minutes, and you’ll receive your personalized Care Plan after your appointment is over.

Progress you can feel

The scale is only one measure, and often not the most meaningful one. At Bold, we pay attention to what we call non-scale victories — the signs that your body is actually working better. Examples include getting your blood pressure under control, watching your A1C come down out of the pre-diabetes range, walking through your own home without fear of falling, or getting out of the car without feeling hunched over.

We’re all about functional health: being able to do more because you feel better and lighter. Members often notice their energy climbing and their aches and pains easing well before they hit any goal weight. You can weigh more than you did as a young adult and still be healthier than you've been in years.

What it costs, and whether you're covered

78% of Bold patients pay $0 out of pocket for their appointment, and Bold is in-network with Medicare, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, Anthem, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and more. Bold bills your insurance directly and confirms your cost estimate before anything is booked — no surprise bills.

On the medication side, as of July 1, 2026, eligible Medicare beneficiaries can get FDA-approved GLP-1 medications through the new Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program for a $50 monthly copay, with eligibility based on your BMI and certain health conditions.

Bold Care is currently available to members in Texas and California, with more states on the way.
